The Canadian Disability Tax Specialists was created for a sole purpose – To help any Canadian with mental or physical disabilities, collect the money they deserve from the Canadian government.
Raising children as a single parent was never easy, but raising children with physical or mental disabilities is another story. My two sons both face different problems that effected and still affect’s their daily lives. My first son has both ADD/ADHD as well as learning disabilities which slowed down his progress in school and social skills. He needed to be on medically prescribed drugs to help him focus, which I had to pay for since it is not covered by OHIP. We went through various prescribed drugs before finding one suitable for his needs, costing us quite a bit of money. My other son has IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), which is not curable. For quite some time we had him seeing different specialists, trying costly organic diets, and running lengthy tests, resulting in stressful medical bills, since again OHIP does not cover all specialists. I found out about the Disability Claim, through the Canada Revenue Agency, but the process to apply for it was complicated, the instructions were unclear, and how without proper guidance, the smallest mistake will result in a rejected claim.
So although we now had a way to claim the federal income tax credit, we had no one to provide any form of guidance – most doctors knew very little about it, accountants and lawyers didn’t help much, even CRA representatives were reluctant to explain how to file the claim properly. We started to feel as if the system was intended to avert eligible Canadians from filing accepted applications.
